The 990 and You: Best Practices for Nonprofits Date: TBD Time: Summer, 2009 Details: This two and a half hour workshop is offered by Nonprofits Unlimited in partnership with Karla Gulke, CPA. Topics include recent changes that affect ALL nonprofits in filing their 2008 IRS Form 990, best practices for nonprofit financial recordkeeping, and what a board member should know about the organization’s finances. Executive directors, board presidents, board treasurers, and nonprofit bookkeepers are especially invited to attend.
The IRS filing requirements for annual information returns for nonprofits have changed. To ensure continued recognition of tax-exempt status all nonprofits should be aware of the new IRS filing provisions. Commencing in 2008, groups that were not previously required to file Form 990 or 990-EZ, because their annual gross receipts were normally $25,000 or less, are now required to electronically submit a Form 990-N with the IRS annually. Under the new legislation that takes effect for tax year 2008 many local nonprofits may for the time being use the Form 990EZ. The income parameters for using the new Form 990 however will change over the next few years and certain written policies and procedures need to be in place by then. For more information on the changes see the IRS exempt organization website at: http://www.irs.gov/charities/index.html.
